Intelligent Functionalities in I&M
PURPOSE
SIMAR proposes a new type of inspection robot composed of an aerial system with advanced navigation capabilities that will allow to safely land on pipes, even if they are located in complex and cluttered locations, and deploy untethered and light-weight crawlers to perform complete inspections of insulated pipes.

Motivation
Materials degrade in Oil&Gas facilities due to exposure to product, environment, and mechanical
demand. In petrochemical facilities, error in the inspection process will have severe implications, including fatalities, injuries, and health effects on the public and plant staff. It may also allow for leaks and the release of dangerous compounds into the environment, resulting in clean-up and remediation costs.
Developing digital solutions based on robotics and AI- based advanced technologies will drastically improve the safety of the petrochemical industry while improving the quality of the collected data and information.
A new approach
Technological Challenge
Within SIMAR, the following technological challenges will be addressed:
- Novel robotic inspection systems for the petrochemical industry
- Autonomous navigation in complex environments
- Augmented reality applied to robotic-based inspections
- Remote and automatic visual inspection of insulation pipes
- Integrate adapted X-ray or PEC sensors to perform complete inspections of insulated pipes.
